The composer sailed to Antarctica to write a piece about climate change. She was overwhelmed by eerie silence, startling beauty – and the stench of penguin poo In recent years my work has become more and more socially and politically engaged – a colleague recently described it as “activist composition”. I’ve written a multimedia saxophone concerto challenging society’s ideas of femininity, I’ve written about anorexia, and I’ve tackled female boxing (which meant learning to box). My newest work is no different. I need to feel a sense of ownership and visceral experience of whatever it is that I’m writing about, so for a project focusing on climate change, it felt essential to find a way to get to the remotest and most untouched part of our planet –
